Pour l’amour de Guenièvre» est, ni plus ni moins, le récit de la légende d’Arthur et des chevaliers de la table ronde. «Pour l’amour de Guenièvre», c’est également le fil conducteur de l’album, un symbole de la légende.
Tout le monde connaît Merlin l’enchanteur, le roi Arthur, l’épée Excalibur, Lancelot, Perceval, la quête du Graal, peut-être moins la reine Guenièvre, femme d’Arthur. Néanmoins nos connaissances générales sur la légende sont contaminées par le dessin animé de Disney, par Indiana Jones et par d’autres œuvres qui brodent sur la légende (C’est vrai que la légende a officiellement diverses formes mais la trame générale change peu.). En outre, nos connaissances sur chacun des éléments ne recoupent pas forcément les connaissances que l’on a sur un autre.
Rares sont les ouvrages ou les films qui transcrivent la légende de A à Z. Untel se concentre sur Merlin, tel autre sur les chevaliers de la table ronde ou encore sur Lancelot uniquement. Et pour gagner un lectorat plus jeune, le récit est souvent édulcoré : Les amours de Lancelot et Guenièvre sont ignorées. Or la légende tourne autour d’une idée de contrepoids : Arthur, fils bâtard qui n’est pas bâtard en réalité, Arthur, roi trompé et Lancelot chevalier amant, Agravain, chevalier amer et envieux et Lancelot quoiqu’il en soit chevalier courtois… Même Merlin n’échappe au dilemme de l’amour.
Quand un ouvrage relate sérieusement la légende, on tombe parfois dans l’extrême opposé : texte de Chrétien de Troyes ou de l’un des autres transcripteurs officiels, richement commenté par les grands spécialistes, avec des propos hautement philosophiques. Voila un album qui est un juste milieu, qui plaira au boétien qui cherche à approfondir sa connaissance. Il cimente les différents chapitres de la légende Il lie entre eux les personnages de cette véritable comédie humaine. Il montre Lancelot en preux chevalier mais sans pour autant nous le rendre lisse. Il est assailli par le doute, par ses obligations envers la loi morale de l’époque. Merlin n’est pas le sautillant grand-père de Disney. Il est énigmatique sans être aussi noir que dans certaines versions de son histoire. La quête du Graal n’est pas le fil de l’histoire, elle n’est qu’une facette.
Servais nous livre une vraie comédie humaine, entre réalité et onirisme (comme pour la mort d’Arthur ou l’éternelle jeunesse de Guenièvre). Les personnages font la navette entre second plan et premier plan, ils réapparaissent à divers niveaux.
Servais arrive à faire un album riche et dense grâce a une mise en page, à un découpage graphique performant.
En 54 pages et 3 chapitres, on assiste à la conception d’Arthur, à sa montée sur le trône, à son mariage, à la création des chevaliers de la table ronde, à la rencontre de Merlin et Viviane dans un premier temps.
A l’arrivée de Lancelot, à son serment a Arthur, à son éclat comme chevalier, à sa déclaration d’amour à sa reine Guenièvre (amour de plus en plus coupable), à son adoubement comme chevalier de la table ronde, à la manipulation dont il fait l’objet pour qu’il couche avec la princesse Hélène et au déshonneur qui s’ensuit, a l’arrivée de Perceval et de la quête de celui-ci pour retrouver Lancelot, dans un second temps.
A l’arrivée du fils de Lancelot, Galaad, le chevalier désiré, qui aura la vision du Graal, au complot contre Lancelot de Mordret, à la découverte par Arthur des amours passées de Lancelot et Guenièvre, à leur condamnation pour traîtrise, au sauvetage de la reine du bûcher par son amant, à la vie laissée sauve par Lancelot a son ancien roi, à l’exil de Lancelot, à la condamnation de Mordret, à la mort d’Arthur, au sort réservé a Excalibur dans le troisième temps.
